When can I see the radiance
When going on a trip, it is worth remembering that the northern lights are not only the most beautiful, but also an extremely "capricious" phenomenon. To increase your chances, make sure that several conditions match at once:
- season – from August to April;
- the sky should be clear and dark, without clouds;
- surveillance is conducted away from the city to exclude the influence of urban illumination.
In order for the hunt for the aurora to be successful, choose a suitable place to stay in advance – the closer it is to the place of observation, the better.
Kola Peninsula
One of the most popular regions for observing the aurora is the Kola Peninsula. In addition, this location is much easier to get to than to more remote parts of the country. The highest chances are in winter, during the polar night, which lasts on the peninsula for more than 40 days. If you have limited travel time, it is best to choose this location.
Arkhangelsk region
The best place to observe is Kenozersky National Park. The main feature of this place is the lack of urban illumination and good conditions for you to see the "flashes". And after a night walk, you can continue your journey by going skiing.
Murmansk region
There are several excellent places in the region to hunt for the northern lights – Pechenga, Teriberka and Vidyaevo. There is practically no illumination from cities in these places and a good view of the night sky opens up. However, when planning a tour, make sure that the roads are not covered with snow to the top and you will be able to reach your destination. It is best to move as part of an organized tour group.
Komi Republic, Vorkuta
The Komi Republic is a region with excellent conditions for observing the aurora. In some periods, it is noticeable even in cities, for example, in Syktyvkar. However, if you do not want to rely on luck and intend to make a real "hunt" for the radiance, go to Vorkuta. But be very careful if you drive the car yourself, so as not to get bogged down in the snow up to the roof of the car.
