Winter Baikal – we are planning a fabulous trip

It is worth going to Lake Baikal in winter, at least in order to see the stunningly beautiful ice – the lake is covered with a crust of transparent ice, under which bizarre shapes – bubbles and patterns are formed. We have compiled for you a selection of locations that can be viewed in the cold season and found out what to do in winter in one of the most beautiful corners of Russia.

What to do on Lake Baikal in winter

Every year, the ice on Lake Baikal is formed in different ways, with the onset of cold weather. It can be either mid-late December or January. Therefore, when planning a trip, check the weather on Lake Baikal and the thickness of the ice. Also, don't forget to get ready - be sure to bring a warm jacket, scarf and boots with comfortable, non-slip soles. And of course, take care of a good mood!

Here is a short list of things to do in winter on Lake Baikal:

  • to get acquainted with the local culture and way of life of the peoples living near the lake;
  • ice skating;
  • try the local cuisine, and especially fish dishes;
  • take a ride on snowmobiles or a dog sled;
  • catch fish under the ice.
And of course, take your camera with you to take a lot of beautiful frames for memory.

What to see

The journey to Lake Baikal begins with the cities located next to this lake. If you have 5 to 10 days to rest, include several locations in the route at once:

  • Irkutsk. It takes an hour to get from the city to the lake, but if you leave more free time, you can see several interesting places: ancient wooden manors, the embankment, the Polish Church and the Church of the Savior;
  • Ulan-Ude. There are guided tours around the city, but you can walk on your own, looking at Bald Mountain to enjoy the magnificent view. Also visit the pedestrian Lenin Street, and if you have time, go to the village of Tarbagatai to see how the local Old Believers live;
  • Talci. The museum city is located at a distance of 50 km from Irkutsk, where you can stop on the way to the village of Listvyanka – another point on the route in front of the lake. The Taltsy Museum complex will be interesting to anyone who studies history and wants to see with their own eyes how people lived in Siberia in the 17th and 20th centuries;
  • Listvyanka village. This is not just a village, but a popular, modern resort with restaurants and hotels. It is from here that it is most convenient to get to the lake – you can go on your own or as part of an excursion group.

Once at the lake, get ready for a busy holiday and a lot of new experiences. And if you prefer traveling outdoors in summer, choose one of the routes through the cities of Russia and visit the most popular museums.
