The Museum of Forgotten Music is a museum featuring ancient Russian instruments. This exhibit allows you to reveal all the historical diversity of Russian tools. The museum was opened by master Sergey Plotnikov. Sergey Ivanovich is self-taught. He recreates ancient tools from drawings and descriptions. He can easily play all the instruments. The peculiarity of this museum is that the instruments here are not enclosed under glass and each visitor will be able to try to play and hear the sound of the instruments, as well as evaluate the peculiarities of the timbre and acoustic properties of each.
History
The beginning of the opening of the museum of forgotten music began in 2003 – more than 20 years ago. Then the founder of the museum, Sergei Plotnikov, made a drawing of the instrument. The first instrument was the bagpipes. The following were: harp, psaltery, horn. Initially, Sergey did not have any information about ancient instruments. However, then he completely immersed himself in history and found out such moments as what it looks like, the time of appearance of a particular tool, why it is used. There are several museums with musical instruments in Russia. However, you can't touch or play them here, and you can't hear their sound.
In the collection of the Sergei Plotnikov Museum, all instruments are made on the basis of different sources. Some are based on ethnographic samples, and some are based on samples from excavations. Sometimes there is no information about some parts of the tool. In this case, the masters improvise, in accordance with the principles of the X-XIV centuries. Thanks to history, craftsmen select suitable materials for making tools. Previously, most of the instruments were made from Christmas trees, wind instruments were made from hollow herbs.
Museum exhibits
The most important feature of the museum of forgotten music is that here you can see musical instruments that have not been used for a long time. In addition, you can touch and play the instruments. The museum receives the exhibits in different ways. Some of the exhibits were obtained through a targeted search by museum staff. However, some appeared in the collection randomly. And some were bought or donated by someone. Most of the tools were provided by the museum staff in Russia.
Special attention should be paid to tools that were created on the basis of various sources: drawings, diagrams, drawings, books, works of art. The unique collection includes: pocket violins, bagpipes, lyres, bandura, kugicles, dombra.
The founder of the museum also makes custom tools. He also personally conducts all excursions. Excursions are conducted in the form of lectures and concerts. Museum visitors act as listeners here. They can also try themselves as a musician.
It is worth highlighting the following tools that have long been forgotten:
- Psaltery: A musical instrument that can be played to old songs. The museum presents several types of ancient gusli: helmet-shaped, lyre-shaped, wing-shaped.
- 17th century French wheeled lyre: A unique exhibit of the museum. It was necessary to play it together: one played music on the keys, and the other turned the knob.
- Harmonicas and harmonicas: Previously, Russian craftsmen themselves came up with their own versions of these tools.
- Vintage domras and horns: These tools were previously used by buffoons, peasants, sailors and soldiers of the XVII - XVIII centuries. The Old Russian domra was made in the second half of the XIX century.
- Balalaika: They appeared in Russia after domr. The museum of forgotten music has modern and ancient two-string balalaika with a long neck.
- A horn from the Vladimir region: It has a long pipe and a low sound.
- Kalyuka (pipe): The instrument is similar to the overtone flute, which was invented in Western European countries.
- A multi-barrel bagpipe flute.
- Ancient harp: It was played by the peoples of the North.
Many of the tools presented above go through the restoration process. The restoration is carried out by the museum staff. In addition to the exhibits, the museum has a large number of information sources that are devoted to an overview of musical instruments from both Russia and other countries. There are also unique sources on this topic. There are a lot of electronic materials.
