The private museum "Petrovskie Ships" in Voronezh is one of the most popular cultural sites actively visited by city residents and guests. It was opened on May 25, 2019, by Voronezh philanthropist Sergey Dmitrievich Naumov on Svobody Street, 59. Its exhibits feature unique artifacts from the late 17th to early 18th century, found by archaeologists at the sites of old shipyards, as well as models of ships, weapons, and military uniforms from the Petrine era. The museum has 7 halls: Cossack Hall, Admiralty Hall, the interactive "Children's Deck," "Wardroom," Legend's Grotto, "Peter I's Room," and an exhibition dedicated to the glory of the Russian city in Voronezh. The museum tells visitors about the birth of the Russian fleet at the shipyards of the Voronezh River.

By the beginning of Peter I's reign, Russia had no access to warm seas. After unsuccessful Azov campaigns in 1695 and 1696, the young tsar decided to start building Russia's military fleet. Peter I chose Voronezh for this purpose for several reasons. The city, founded in 1586 to protect the southwestern borders of the Russian Tsardom, was located on the Voronezh River where it flows into the Don River, leading to the Azov Sea. Around the city were many pine and oak forests, whose timber was used for shipbuilding. The fortress city itself housed many ship and boat craftsmen. Near Voronezh lies the city of Lipetsk, known for its metallurgical production and iron ores.

The "Petrovskie Ships" museum in Voronezh reflects all stages of the unique and crucial event in Russian history – the creation of the first military ships of the Russian fleet on river, not sea, shipyards.

Peter the Great is the founder of the Russian Navy from scratch. He created the Azov, Baltic fleets, and the Caspian flotilla. He personally supervised shipbuilding and took part in it. As a result of his efforts, 111 line ships, 38 frigates, 60 brigantines, 8 snows, 67 large galleys, and a large number of other vessels were built.

He developed the first naval "Code for Galleys," established the St. Andrew's flag of the Russian Navy, and the Admiralty. All this happened in Voronezh. The tsar was the first in the world to develop and create a unique "dry dock" system for shipbuilding and storage, and on April 27, 1700, he launched the first Russian battleship "Goto Predestinatsiya." All these significant events in Russian history are recreated by the first private Voronezh museum "Petrovskie Ships."

Sergey Dmitrievich Naumov, head of the Voronezh Entrepreneurs Union "Opora" and creator of the museum "Petrovskie Ships," shares that the idea for such a museum originated from a student kayaking trip from Voronezh to Azov, which he took with friends. After this, S.D. Naumov studied the experience of a large number of private museums, which he later used in creating the museum of the first naval ships of the Russian fleet.

In 2016, S.D. Naumov involved about 100 craftsmen and specialists from different cities of Russia, as well as from Kharkiv, Ukraine, to create authentic models of ships and items of that era for the creation of the fleet museum in Voronezh.

To popularize and better understand the history of the period of the birth of the Russian fleet, modern multimedia devices were purchased, allowing static objects to be animated through video installations. The museum created unique models of the Azov assaults and the Battle of Gangut.

The "Petrovskie Ships" museum in Voronezh features 7 exhibitions:

  • "Cossack Hall" or "Voivode's Hall," which tells the history of Voronezh before the young tsar arrived, visitors learn about the primitive settlements at the site of Voronezh, the formation of the Belgorod defensive line in the late Middle Ages, the Time of Troubles period, and the first voivode of Voronezh, boyar Semyon Saburov;
  • The main Admiralty Hall is dedicated to the creation of the Russian fleet, showcasing models of the most famous ships of the Petrine era. Interactive maps present interactive models of the capture of Azov and the Battle of Gangut;
  • "Peter the First's Room" offers visitors the chance to take photos with a life-size figure of the great sovereign and learn about his professions, reforms, and see original exhibits from the Petrine era, telling about Peter I's personality and his life in Voronezh;
  • "Wardroom" tells about the maritime life of that period, where visitors can take photos in Petrine-era costumes and with weapons of that time;
  • The "Children's Deck" hall features masts, shrouds, and a helm, which can be touched and spun, offering children a sea-themed cartoon, and virtual reality glasses allowing them to feel like they are under a sailboat or a participant in a naval battle;
  • "Hall of Russian Fleet Glory" is dedicated to victories and unsuccessful battles, featuring a diorama of the 1699 Kerch campaign episode with 10 Russian ships.

The "Petrovskie Ships" museum in Voronezh houses not only replicas but also rare exhibits:

  • a dugout canoe made from solid oak;
  • elements of armament;
  • household items;
  • coins;
  • anchors of that time, in the making of which Peter I himself could have personally participated.

The foundation of the museum is a unique collection of reduced models of ships, created with the participation and under the guidance of the Russian tsar.
